Though lacking the rich sonority and control of the best string sections, at full throttle these players can be quite impressive. And the Poole audience seemed to respond positively not only to her open-hearted music-making, but also to her carefully prepared and informative talk before the performance of Bart? Concerto for Orchestra. On Wednesday, in the second of her recent pair of BSO concerts, Alsop took the bull by the horns by showcasing the orchestra’s main weakness, its string section, in the opening performance of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. The BSO clearly admires and likes her; she got its overwhelming vote for the top job. In the last month or so she has been establishing herself very firmly here with concerts up and down the country. It’s nevertheless true that the players’ morale has suffered on account of recent uncertainties, including the hiatus involved in the appointment of Kreizberg’s successor; and the BSO does remain a somewhat uneven orchestra.Alsop, an American, has been an active conductor in Britain with a number of major orchestras for several years. Wessex Hall, too, is undergoing a makeover, and now has a black-and-white, somewhat severe new decor and, more importantly, rather better focused acoustics.
Some underestimate the good work done by the former chief conductor, Yakov Kreizberg (who shortly reappears with Alfred Brendel and the orchestra). Things are, it seems, finally looking up for this financially beleaguered band.

In Poole last week the Bournemouth Symphony Orch-estra played a programme of Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and Bart?nder its principal conductor designate, Marin Alsop. The Durutti Column’s latest album, ‘Rebellion’, is on Artful Records. Just as God said: definitely due a revival.’24 Hour Party People’ is released 5 April. “Don’t mention him,” warns Carol.”I called up Mute,” Reilly explains, “and they said, ‘We’d love to sign you, but we’ve just spent all our money on Moby.’”"But if you know anyone who needs a film score…” says Carol, trailing off “Course, he’d have to get some money He never gets any money He’s like a charity.” Reilly quietly sips his coffee. The songs are evocative and would seem to lend themselves to the visual medium And if Moby can do it… After all, the Durutti Column’s “Requiem for a Father” featured on the Jerry Maguire soundtrack I think she’s right.

A few years ago, he was flogging his beloved guitars when Carol angrily told him, “Don’t sell them – play them!” And that was that Movies may be one way forward, Carol suggests. “But what makes the better story?”Despite his financial woes, which led to an extended period of inactivity, Reilly seems once more his old, driven self. Then I saw them live and I told him to take them seriously and to spend some proper money on them.” He shakes his head. “Tony had been initially dismissive of them and he didn’t wanna get too involved So he asked me to produce them ‘cos it was cheaper that way. But when I ask Reilly about his experience of producing the first Happy Mondays EP, which, according to Wilson, ended with Reilly in a state of near-collapse over the band’s drug use and unruly behaviour, he is aghast “I thought the Mondays were great,” he protests. “He gave me my career,” he says simply.Wilson believed in the Durutti Column before anyone else did. Then, the Inland Revenue wanted a serious word in his ear, regarding back-taxes, and he ended up losing his home But Reilly doesn’t blame Wilson.
